I just got back from the Cricut Maker Event and I'm excited to finally share my Cricut Maker Review with you! Meanwhile, we're still plugging away at the 24 Week Cricut Series! Working with type is my VERY favorite thing. It's why I'm big on Hand Lettering…but I also like working with fonts! Using fonts in for the Cricut is somewhat similar to working in Adobe Illustrator, so learning to edit Text in Cricut Design Space was pretty easy for me to learn. This tutorial goes over some of the basic things you need to know about fonts in Design Space!
What You'll Need to Edit Text in Cricut Design Space
- Cricut Explore Air or Cricut MAKER (check out my FB Live post for details)
- Cricut Design Space – if you haven't already tried the new program, go HERE and HERE to get all the details.
- Fonts – I use Freestyle from Creative Market, or you can use the font library in Cricut Access.
Tools you need to know to Edit Text in Cricut Design Space
- Font – choose the fonts you would like to use. You can filter by Cricut fonts or System fonts (these are the fonts on your computer).
- Style – choose a font style, like bold, italic, etc. This only works if the font you have installed already has different styles.
- Font Size – pretty self-explanatory, but you can use the drop-down, arrows, or manually type in a number to change the size of the font.
- Letter Space – change the spacing between each letter. The higher the number, the further apart the letters. It's okay to use negative numbers.
- Line Space – change the spacing between paragraphs.
- Alignment – align the text to the left, right, or center.
- Advanced – this will ungroup certain aspects of a font. If it's one line, it will ungroup letters, so you can move them individually. If it's two or more, you can ungroup by line.
- Weld – Combines shapes and letters to create one cut line. Learn more about the Weld Tool.
How To Edit Text In Cricut Design Space
- First, you'll create a new document from your dashboard, then click on the type tool.
- Type in the box, then choose your font. If you ever need to edit your text, just double-click on the word and the type cursor will appear.
- At this point, I like to change the size and alignment. You can change the size on the toolbar, or you can simply drag word by the bottom icon (the one that looks like two arrows).
- You've probably noticed the spacing is pretty far apart. To move them closer together, use the Letter Spacing Tool. Use the down arrow to move it closer, or enter in a negative number manually.
- The fonts will still be a little wonky, so go to ADVANCED and click on UNGROUP TO LETTERS. Now, you can move each letter closer together so each letter is connecting. I like doing this with script bounce letter fonts because it doesn't have to be placed perfectly.
- Now, you'll select all the letters and click on WELD.
- Now, you're ready to cut or create the rest of your design!
Tip: Sometimes, letters don't weld properly. In my case, the loop in the O welded together. If this happens, weld all the letters except the one that wasn't welding, then select them all and try welding again.
